Jonah & the whale

I am really excited about our summer study of Jonah.

Many of us have heard about “Jonah and the 

Whale” so many times that we think of it as a 

cartoon—but, guess what: the Bible doesn't 

even say that Jonah was swallowed by a

"whale"-- the Bible says it was a “fish”!!! 

There is so much more to this 

story than just a big fish. 

Jonah is a pretty short book 

and it can be read quickly—

why don’t you try reading 

through it as we study it this 

summer?!!!! 

Jonah was written around 

775 B.C.  And we know Jonah 

is real because Jesus talks 

about him in Matthew 12:39-41!

Jonah’s name means “a dove”

—first one to answer where else

we see a dove & water in the 

Old Testament wins a fabulous 

prize… Just like Jonah was to 

take God’s Promises to Ninevah- 

so this dove brought God’s 

promises to His people, too---

(that’s a hint!)!

The book of Jonah confirms that

God’s gift of salvation is for 

EVERYONE—not just the Israelites.  

It also shows how God pursues 

us and how painful it can be when 

we disobey God.
